About Halbgänse
Halbgänse (Tadornini) are medium-sized waterfowl whose body shape and behaviour mediate between geese and true ducks. Most species are monogamous and nest in ground hollows, dense vegetation or tree cavities. In Central Europe three species dominate the picture, with overlapping but distinct habitat preferences.
The Egyptian goose (Nilgans) occupies nutrient-rich standing waters, park landscapes and river floodplains and nests very flexibly in reeds, tree cavities or the abandoned nests of other birds. The ruddy shelduck (Rostgans) prefers open landscapes around shallow lakes and still waters. The common shelduck (Brandgans) is classically a coastal bird of shallow sandy and tidal flats but is increasingly establishing inland breeding sites. All three species share a strong tie to open water with herbaceous shoreline vegetation.
Population trends differ sharply. The Egyptian goose is an expanding neozoon and has been listed since 2017 on the EU register of invasive alien species of Union concern. It falls under hunting law in several federal states with defined open seasons. The ruddy shelduck is subject to the Federal Hunting Act but carries a year-round closed season in Germany. The common shelduck is broadly protected and closed to hunting in most regions. For clean identification it is worth remembering that Halbgänse are not true geese but sit closer to the ducks: their plumage typically shows higher contrast, often with rust-brown tones or strong markings, rather than the uniform grey-brown or white of greylag or bean geese, and their body size remains noticeably smaller.
