Hunting season
Fasan Schleswig-Holstein
The common pheasant (Phasianus colchicus) is a ground-dwelling galliform with marked sexual dimorphism. Cocks carry iridescent plumage and a long tail, while hens wear plain brown camouflage. For hunters in the German-speaking countries, the pheasant is the classic piece of lowland small game and a defining feathered species of the open farmland.

About Fasan
The pheasant inhabits semi-open cultivated landscapes and depends on a small-scale mosaic of fields, hedgerows, copses, reed and sedge fringes, and riparian margins. It needs cover, open ground for feeding and display, and year-round food at the same time. Closed forest stands are avoided, while structurally rich edges along ditches and watercourses are strongly preferred. By day the pheasant feeds on the ground, scratching and probing for seeds, berries, green plant material, and insects.
As an exceptionally alert and shy ground bird, the pheasant is an excellent runner but a reluctant, short-range flier. A defining trait is its roosting tree, the Schlafbaum: at dusk the bird flies up into trees or tall shrubs to spend the night safe from ground predators. During the breeding season cocks hold strong territories and announce themselves with their loud, far-carrying crow.
The pheasant is the classic quarry of the traditional Niederwild-Treibjagd, the lowland driven shoot. A line of beaters working with versatile flushing dogs moves the birds toward standing Guns posted at field corners, hedgerows, and rides. Populations have been declining across large parts of Central Europe for decades. The main drivers are the intensification of agriculture with the loss of hedges, field margins, and fallow land, unfavourable weather during the rearing season, and high predation pressure. Effective Hege therefore focuses on habitat improvement, planting flowering strips and cover structures, predator management, and need-based winter feeding.
