Bekassine (Sumpfschnepfe) Aragon
The common snipe (Gallinago gallinago), in German Bekassine or Sumpfschnepfe, is a thrush-sized wader with a strikingly long bill and intricate brown camouflage. Its signature move is the steep, zigzag flush from dense cover of wet meadows and moors, often noticed only when the bird is already in the air.

About Bekassine (Sumpfschnepfe)
Common snipe inhabit extensively managed wet meadows, fens, raised bogs, wet fallow land and shallow waterside zones. They need soft, muddy substrates with pools, ditches or open margins where the long, sensitive bill tip can be probed deep into the ground in search of worms, snails, insects and their larvae, complemented by seeds. The plumage is so cryptic that a snipe will hold its place until a hunter or dog is almost on top of it, then explode upwards with loud calls and the characteristic zigzag climb that has shaped its reputation in DACH wing-shooting tradition.
The species is best known for its aerial display. In the breeding season the male climbs high, then dives at an angle with the outer tail feathers fanned out. These feathers vibrate in the airstream and produce a drumming, bleating sound, which is the source of the old German names Himmelsziege and Meckervogel, meaning sky goat and bleating bird. Breeding areas are open, undisturbed wetlands; on migration many birds pass through the DACH region towards Mediterranean and African wintering grounds.
The snipe is a flagship species of wet meadows and one of the major losers of drainage and grassland intensification. In Germany it is Red Listed and protected year round, with no open season at all. In Austria the snipe is treated as huntable game in some provinces but subject to strict closed-season rules. Responsible hunters in the DACH region contribute mainly through habitat work, rewetting of meadows, predator management and careful species identification, so that protected waders are never confused with legal quarry in the moment of the shot.
