About Gamswild

Chamois inhabit steep, rocky high mountain terrain and across German speaking Europe are tied above all to the Alpine arc. Through natural spread and historical reintroductions, additional populations have established themselves in some mid range mountains, for example in the Black Forest, the Swabian Alps, and in the area of the Jura and the Vosges. In summer, chamois occupy high alpine meadows, dwarf pine zones, and rocky bands. In winter they move down into more sheltered forest belts. Slope orientation, exposure, and rock structure shape their habitat use throughout the year.

The social structure is marked by a strong separation of the sexes. Females, yearlings, and kids live year round in herds, led by an experienced lead female, the Leitgeiß, and can number fifteen to thirty animals in summer. Middle aged bucks form small bachelor groups of roughly three to six animals, while old bucks usually range alone. During the rut in late autumn and early winter, these structures break up. Dominant bucks push into the female herds, drive off rivals in often long pursuits across ridges and rock, and lose noticeable body mass in the process, which contributes to higher mortality in the following winter.

In day to day hunting practice, chamois are the heart of mountain hunting, the Bergjagd. The classic approach is the stalk, the Pirsch, along ridges, gullies, and game trails, complemented by the Ansitz, the seated watch, at well overlooked slope sections and at traditional stand points. Identifying the right animal, the Ansprache, requires sound judgement of age, sex, and quality class and is prepared by long observation from cover. Game management, the Hege, focuses on a balanced age structure across all classes, a healthy sex ratio, and a stock matched to the carrying capacity of the habitat. For the German speaking region, chamois are therefore not only a hunted species but also the cultural lead species of Alpine hunting.
